Established
in 1991, Farnham U3A currently has over 850 members. Our U3A is
open to all – a true University – since anyone may join
whatever their qualifications. We study because we want to, and
there are no examinations or awards.
Our membership is drawn from a wide social range. Our only stipulation
is that members should be retired or partially-retired, of the third
age, 50 plus and there is no upper age limit.
Our
aim is to provide a wide variety of classes and activities –
currently numbering over seventy. Some of which are of an academic
nature; literature, languages, history, and science. Some with a
practical content; painting, photography, computing. And some which
are purely recreational; t'ai chi, yoga, rambling, and bridge.
Members
pay an annual subscription (£35) and may join as many groups
as they wish. The reason that our U3A can operate so successfully
on a low budget, is that our tutors and group leaders give their
services free, and in return they are able to participate –
as learners – in many other groups.
Our
academic year extends over three terms, from mid-September to late-June.
Classes are held only during the day, and the majority take place
at Farnham Maltings our local
Arts & Community centre.
| The
University of the Third Age, is a worldwide movement encouraging
older people in the “third age” of life to take
up educational, cultural, and recreational interests in friendly
and informal surroundings. For more information about U3A in

The
social side of our U3A is regarded as very important to our age
group, and all of our group and extra-mural activities provide good
opportunities for members to socialise and to form friendships –
even to marry.
We
run two extra-mural Clubs, for Theatre and Concerts, arranging coach
transport to London and other venues, to attend major theatre productions
and concerts.
In
addition, a number of our groups organise trips, both at home and
abroad, as an integral part of their courses, which include Art
History, Archaeology and Horticulture.
There
is no U3A Office per se at local level and dissemination of information
is through our Notice Board at the Farnham Maltings, by word of
mouth at our Monthly General Meetings (which all our members are
encouraged to attend), through our bi-annual newsletter and via
our website.
Overall,
we believe that our U3A offers a wealth of opportunities to Third
Agers to enable us to keep our minds and bodies active, to expand
our knowledge and capabilities to the full, to make new friendships,
and – above all – to enjoy life.
Join us and enjoy!
