Reading Latin
U3A Farnham2011-2012
Course 53 Reading Latin Wednesday afternoons 2.00-3.15 fortnightly
We follow the Oxford Latin Course: There are two books we shall use.
Oxford Latin Course Part III.Balme & Norwood 0-19-912228-8. This is the final part of the teaching course we have been following for several years. It will take us through some of the more advanced topics such as gerunds and gerundives as well as providing some simpler texts and exercises. You may be able to share the book for a few sessions, but you are bound to need a grammar of some sort eventually.
Oxford Latin Reader Balme & Norwood 0-19-521209-6. These are original Latin texts with some small omissions. The original texts are all available on the Internet in (e.g.) http://www.thelatinlibrary.com so you don’t have to get the book. However the book does give historical background, useful translation notes and a selective vocabulary. If anyone has problems getting hold of the texts, let me know; the translation notes are more problematical since they are subject to copyright. However, I am able to supply the notes and text for the first session.
The theme this year is War and Peace. The “War” texts are all in the Reader from Livy Book 21 with the subject the 2nd Punic War and are in the Reader. The “Peace” texts are from Virgil’s Georgics. I will supply a list of the texts separately. If you wish to suggest a text within the theme I’m sure we can include it.

I apologise to students in asking you to obtain two books for this course. Those who have been attending in earlier years will already have the course book. For new students you should be able to attend a few sessions before needing to make full expenditure should you wish. The books should be the only necessary expenditure for several years assuming I can continue the course.
