The
aim of the Farnham U3A Organ Group is to visit, see and hear organs
and to consider the history of the organ, now over 2000 years, and
the music composed for it; probably more than for any other single
instrument.
We
visit some very interesting buildings, mainly churches and cathedrals
but including secular places too. In the past we have visited organs
of all sizes, from those in tiny village churches to the cathedral
cities of Chichester, Guildford, Winchester and Portsmouth. The
Rieger Organ at Christ Church Cathedral Oxford and the magnificant
organ at St Paul’s Cathedral built in 1673 by Bernard Schmidt
(Father Smith) with
its case designed by Sir Christopher Wren and carvings executed
by Grinling Gibbons. There is no need to play the organ in order
to appreciate the music. Most members do not play at all but, if
you wish to have a short play, it can be usually arranged.
Our
members with cars are always willing to give a lift to those without
transport.
