| The Seminar will be a discussion among equals. It is hoped overseas topics will dominate domestic ones, and that the Seminars never descend to football, pop music, or plastic people famous for being famous. |

This is a History Group run by non-historians for non-historians. Basically we are all amateurs interested in History and in collectively learning from each other. The mechanism is simple: members take turns around once every 2 years, to present a Historic personality or subject they are interested in and which fits into the current theme for discussion within the Group. For this reason we restrict our number to 30 and call ourselves a Seminar. The Oxford Dictionary definition of Seminar is "small class for discussion ".
Such presentations are not very onerous to prepare: just reading a book or two and summarizing one's views provides ample material for subsequent discussion. Visual aids, although illustrative, are not essential. Because self-help is our guiding principle, we do not have to rely on outside speakers.
Since our creation in 1998 we have covered the History of Empires, Historic Personalities, Historic Subjects, such as the History of Language, Slavery etc. We now pursue consecutive periods/themes, ie after the Mediaeval Period we entered the Reformation and Renaissance, which will be followed by the 17th Century Age of Absolutism and Counter Reformation/Baroque.
If you would like to learn more about us, you can contact Hugh Hussey, our Secretary (01252 793644), or myself, Hans Dumoulin (01252 714984).

The Military History group has been running for about fourteen years. As you can see from the forthcoming programme it covers a wide variety of subjects. The speakers are drawn from many sources, but one of the objectives is to give U3A members an opportunity to prepare and deliver talks themselves. Research facilities are superb, with the Prince Consort’s Library and the Aldershot Library and Museum close by.
Approximately one third of members are the wives of men who were served in the forces- it is not a male preserve!
We had an interesting series of talks last Academic year and I hope you will enjoy these too.
Our speakers come from both outside and inside the group. Preparing a talk is a challenging, but most rewarding adventure. If anyone feels they would like to give a talk on any aspect of military, naval, or air war history, or knows someone who would like to, please contact the Group Leader, Michael England, or Peter Newman, the Group Secretary on 01252-793916. You will be given every assistance with producing visuals for your talk if you require it. |
