The Military History group has been running for about fourteen years. As you can see from the forthcoming programme it covers a wide variety of subjects. The speakers are drawn from many sources, but one of the objectives is to give U3A members an opportunity to prepare and deliver talks themselves. Research facilities are superb, with the Prince Consort’s Library and the Aldershot Library and Museum close by.

Approximately one third of members are the wives of men who were served in the forces- it is not a male preserve!

We had an interesting series of talks last Academic year and I hope you will enjoy these too.

Our speakers come from both outside and inside the group. Preparing a talk is a challenging, but most rewarding adventure. If anyone feels they would like to give a talk on any aspect of military, naval, or air war history, or knows someone who would like to, please contact the Group Leader, Charles Stuart on 01252-722947, or Peter Newman, the Group Secretary on 01252-793916. You will be given every assistance with producing visuals for your talk if you require it.

The Seminar will be a discussion among equals.   It is hoped overseas topics will dominate domestic ones, and that the Seminars never descend to football, pop music, or plastic people famous for being famous.

Our current objective is to restore some chronological sequence to our programme. This will be achieved, during 2010, by moving into the Renaissance and Reformation periods, the main historical events following the Mediaeval times, covered as a U3A-wide theme recently.
As an exception, in support of this next U3A Victorian theme, there will be two 0pen Sessions of the History Seminar:

October 5 2009-'Gladstone and Lloyd George' by Barry Smith
March 1 2010-'Ladies of the Victorian Period' by Nona Parfitt
